State Testing Overview

STAAR Tests -  The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) program, which was implemented in spring 2012 and updated by HB3906 in 2019, includes annual assessments for

  • Mathematics, grades 3–8
  • English Language Arts and Reading, grades 3-8
  • Science at grades 5 and 8
  • Social Studies at grade 8
  • End-of-course (EOC) assessments for English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology and U.S history.

STAAR-Alt 2 Tests -  The Texas Education Agency (TEA) designed the STAAR Alternate 2 to assess students in grades 3–8 and high school who have significant cognitive disabilities and are receiving special education services.

Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELPAS) -  Assesses the progress that limited English proficient students (LEP) make in learning the English language through the use observations and testing in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing of the English language.
